t was one of my friend’s birthday and we wanted to give her a cool and unusual present. My friends came up with the idea to go axe throwing. Yes, axe throwing. I felt instant panic when they proposed this idea to me, somehow I am scared of axes. But you do what you gotta do for your friends, right? So before we went to a sound healing meditation (life is all about balance, you know) we went to el Hachazo, which means: the Axe. Trust me, I’ve never been so scared to run into an axe.
Good instructions
This was in the Summer of 2020, so we were in the middle of the pandemic. Because of the restrictions, we were the only ones for quite a while. As you might have guessed, I didn’t join the activity, however, I was there for entertainment and applause.
It was actually really nice that we were the only ones because the instructor had all the time to help my friends and explain everything they needed to know. I mean, that’s quite important if you’re gonna throw a bunch of blades around.
The instructor was very friendly, funny and he spoke a little English. This is always great in case our brain suddenly forgets that we understand and speak Spanish.
My friends were quite nervous, but this guy was making sure that everybody felt safe and comfortable. So, bonus points for him!
Competition & duration
Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s time for a competition. If the thrill-seekers you’re with are very competitive, then be prepared. You’ll play several games and you bet they are challenging!
Now, you probably want to know the duration of this activity. One session lasts one hour. We were there for two hours. I think two hours is just perfect, as you need some time to warm up. My friends really enjoyed it and I actually enjoyed watching them. I wasn’t that scared anymore. And no, I didn’t expect that at all.
Reservations & prices
Everybody is welcome at el Hachazo. They organize several activities for bachelor and birthday parties, team-building events, and even tinder dates. Ha, imagine doing a round of truth or dare while throwing axes around with your tinder date. That could be fun ;-)
You can make a reservation through their website, where you’ll see the available time slots. Make sure you choose the right center, because there are a few centers in Madrid as well.
The prices vary depending on what you’re looking for and you can buy some vouchers for a couple of sessions as well. There’s a lot more information on their website, so do check that out.
Free advice
- Wear indoor shoes, unless you want to risk cutting your toes off.
- If you don’t understand Spanish that well, ask them if they can speak English.
Their English is pretty good! - Try some of their tasty beers, but only after your session. You’re not allowed to drink alcohol while axe-throwing, it’s for your own safety.
Location & opening hours
They have three centers in Spain: two in Madrid and one in Valencia.
